Lonnie Rashid Lynn (born March 13, 1972) is an American rapper and actor better known by his stage name Common (also known as Common Sense). He made his breakthrough in 1992 with the album Can I Borrow a Dollar?, and his 1994 album Resurrection received critical acclaim. Until the late 1990s, he had an underground following. Through his work with the Soulquarians, he earned mainstream success.
Like Water for Chocolate (2000), Common’s debut major-label album, was a commercial triumph. He also narrated the documentary Bouncing Cats, which tells the story of one man’s efforts to better the lives of Ugandan children through hip-hop/b-boy culture. On the AMC western television series Hell on Wheels, he played Elam Ferguson.
